On a quiet tree-lined corner of the Condesa Neighborhood in Mexico City, I stumbled into a store that pulled me in with its aesthetic allure. As I walked in and was greeted by a friendly woman, I quickly came to find out that it wasn’t just a pretty skincare boutique, but a store that was keeping the ancient healing powers of Calendula alive.
The Mexican brand was established in 2017 after the founder, Maria, embarked on a desperate quest for a skincare remedy. After years of trying seemingly everything, her search led her to a homeopathic pharmacy in the (then less developed) Roma area. It was there that she encountered a pharmacist who crafted their own calendula extract, sparking a pivotal moment for the brand’s creation.
The calendula worked like magic, and rather than keeping this secret to herself, Maria started to develop a skincare line for others looking for a cure for their breakouts and other skin ailments.
Today For All Folks is a 360-degree skincare line that is gender-neutral and promotes the ideals of slow living and minimalism. Maria puts extreme care and thought into each product that she launches, saying “I’d rather not launch something than put something out that’s not perfect.”
She has some products she’s been working on for years that have yet to make their debut. Since everything is done with such attention to detail, it’s possible to have one of each product type because she’s confident they are perfect, playing into the brand’s ethos of minimalism.
If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering, “So what in the world is Calendula?” I had never heard of it before walking into For All Folks on that Saturday afternoon in Mexico City.
What is the Calendula Plant?
Calendula is a flowering plant that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Used by the ancient Mayan and Hindu cultures, it was believed to have healing powers when ingested or applied topically.
Calendula has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including skin irritations, infections, and even menstrual cramps. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it an effective treatment for acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It also contains antioxidants that help protect the skin from free radicals and promote healing and regeneration.
In homeopathic medicine, Calendula is often used to speed up the healing process of wounds and cuts. Its antiseptic properties help prevent infection and its anti-inflammatory properties reduce swelling and bruising. It can also be used as a mouthwash to treat oral infections or soothe sore throats.
Every product in the For All Folks skincare line has Calendula as the key ingredient, from their facial serum to their body lotion and even their sex lube.
Since Calendula can soothe and heal irritated skin, deeply hydrate, as well as regenerate any skin type, it’s the ideal ingredient for skin care.
Outside of Calendula, they use natural essential oils to create the olfactory for their line, making each of their products a moment for aromatherapy while you’re applying them.
This line works like magic, and I don’t say that lightly, for all the typical skincare needs, from anti-aging, to scar healing, and it’s suitable for even the most sensitive skin types.
The For All Folks serum has quickly become a staple in my skincare routine. It has made my face feel as soft as it did when I was a baby, without making me breakout. This is saying a lot since I have never been able to find a product that hydrates my skin without irritating it.
The body lotion is another standard in my daily use now. I feel like I am at the spa when I lather it on after the shower, with its relaxing rosemary scent. The lotion is also a natural SPF, meaning you can still soak in vitamin D without getting sunburnt.
Similarly, their face lotion feels light and not sticky like a lot of lotions leave your face feeling. It’s almost like you don’t have anything on, the only reason you’ll remember you have it on is how ultra-hydrated your face will feel.
The face and body wash is gentle, but get’s the job done without stripping your body of all hydration. I love that it’s a two-in-one that works perfectly for both your face and your body- so you can kiss your backne goodbye.
If you’re feeling like you need a little luxury added to your routine, their Gold Mask feels like buttercream frosting for the face, but it’s actually made of gold, clay, hyaluronic acid, and of course caléndula.
